If using a chisel for paring back to the marked line (tip: use a knifed line, not a pencil mark) it's quite normal to do this freehand, leaning over the chisel so you can sight down it. Work from both sides to the middle, not all the way through from one side. If you'd like some help keeping the notch sides as vertical as possible see previous Answer on using guide blocks. | |
